Fasciotomy healing in pictures *warning* graphic photos

Throw Back 8/14/20
A few hours after being released from the hospital.
We were so happy to have him home and feeling completely incompetent in caring for him.

*WARNING* Graphic photos coming up

After the last post I decided it would be cool to see the progress of Brigham's fasciotomy sites in pictures. You know what they say...a picture is worth a thousand words!

It is INCREDIBLE to see these changes.   It brings me anxiety remembering the 3 times a week Wound Vac changes. The whole house dreaded it especially Brigham who had to live through the intense pain. The girls would put their ear buds in and turn up the music to drown out the yelling. Ugh!  It was horrible.  How did we survive?  I'm impressed with our strength. I am so proud of Brigham, he has been through some really hard things in the last 5 months. He has been brave and has a good attitude.

Some of these pictures we have never shown because at the time Brigham did not want to see them.  They are pretty graphic, showing the inside of his calf.  Brigham never looked at his fasciotomy sites until he had the skin grafts.

If you want a reminder about why the surgeons had to perform a fasciotomy on Brigham refer to this blog post:   https://brighamroberts.blogspot.com/2020/09/skin-graft-surgery-9142020.html

And here is a short video he took of his skin grafts on September 26th 2020. Kinda cool, kinda gross!

  1. I'd like to ask someone who has experience with surgery.
so, I have some questions after reading your article.
Q1. Fasciotomy Is the thickness of the preoperative calf the same as that of the postoperative calf?
Q2. Did you have a muscle herniation after the fasciotomy surgery? And do you still have a muscle herniation?

    1. Hello. I'm just a mom writing about her sons experience and I have no medical experience. I just write what I am told at Dr. appointments. I will try and answer your questions. Q1: I think you are asking if his calf is the same size pre fasciotomy as it is after. No, his right calf (the one with fasciotomy) is quite a bit bigger. However, that could be due to swelling he is still experiencing from the vein bypass and recent blood clots in his thigh. Q2: None of the doctors have mentioned a muscle herniation so I do not think so. Everything has gone well with the skin grafts and healing great.
